BASE METALS AND PLATINGS

DYRBERG/KERN uses two different base metals STAINLESS STEEL & BRASS. The decision on what base metal to choose depends solely on the individual design and properties of the jewellery item. If a soft organic look is wanted - brass is used. If a strong technically perfect look is wanted - stainless steel is used. Please see the material guide on each individual product for more information.

STAINLESS STEEL is a very hard, strong durable metal. Stainless goes through many processes, which make it very resistant to scratches, corrosion and oxidation. The colour of steel is a cold silvery shade, which may be given a high polish or structured surface depending on the desired result. Stainless steel can be ION plated to give a different colour finish.

BRASS is an alloy of copper and zinc. Adding aluminum makes brass stronger and more corrosion resistant. We use brass as our base metal for our jewellery for its unique properties. Brass receives the top plating in stainless steel very well. Freshly polished brass is similar to gold in appearance, but becomes more reddish within days of exposure to the elements, which is why a top plating process is required. Brass is relatively resistant to tarnishing, and is often used as decoration and for coins. In antiquity, polished brass was often used as a mirror. Brass is nickel and lead free and anti-allergenic.

Let us try to explain the great advantages of our technically advanced plating technique. Most of our plating is not done by traditional wet-plating, but by the use of a highly technical IP plating technique which is normally used in the watch industry. ION PLATING is the most advanced surface finishing process on the market. Ion plating is carried out in a vacuumed sealed environment which makes the plating more durable and resistant. It also provides a brighter finish. ION plating is 5 - 8 times stronger than traditional wet plating processes.

It is hard to give an estimate about the durability – it depends on how and where the jewellery piece is being worn.  One of the numerous advantages IP plating has over wet-plating is its environmental friendliness. IP does not rely on water and contamination through waste water for production process, is avoided or kept at an absolute minimum. Colour change or tarnishing of the IP plating rarely happens.

METALS

SHINY SILVER

A base of brass is IP plated with stainless steel targets. Until now, palladium was used in electroplating to obtain a silvery color. As stainless steel is harder than palladium, jewellery pieces can be subjected to longer wear and tear.

SHINY GOLD

The plating composition is as follows: a base of brass is IP plated with Titanium Nitrate, which is achieved through the physical reaction of titanium metal and nitrogen, followed by a thin layer of genuine 23k gold.

GUN METAL

Gun metal is an ion plating, looking like darkened black metal, matching the fashions of the season.

SWAROVSKI CRYSTALS

CRYSTALS

Made with CRYSTALLIZEDTM - Swarovski Elements from the Austrian manufacturer Swarovski are the main stone in our jewellery. The Xilion Chaton has 14 unique facets, all machine-cut with utmost precision. The cutting technique used to create the Xilion Chaton makes the crystal stand out from any other cut.

Made with CRYSTALLIZEDTM - Swarovski Elements is the luxury brand name for the range of precision-cut lead crystal glass chatons we use for our jewellery. In 2004 the company released the Xilion, a new copyrighted cut designed to optimize the brilliance of the diamond cut chaton that we use in abundance. The crystals are either crystal clear, solid coloured, or effect coated to imitate natural or recreate never before seen stones.

STERLING SILVER COLLECTION

925 STERLING SILVER

All jewellery in this collection is made of 925 Sterling Silver. The pieces with a gold finish are plated with 18k gold. All stones are clear Cubic Zirconias or cabochon cut gem stones such as Onyx, Grey Opal, Rose Quatz, Carneol and Aquamarine.

METAL BANGLE SIZES

Our bangles come in two shapes; circle and elliptical. The elliptical (oval) bangles have a clasp and can open over the wrist, making it easier to fit a smaller size. Size II is the most common size in both shapes.

What is DYRBERG/KERN’s Time collection made of?

All watch cases are stainless steel. The straps are either made of genuine leather, stainless steel or soft rubber. Please refer to your operating instructions manual for further information.

What are Swarovski Crystals?

Swarovski produces crystals of the finest quality, and their name has become synonymous with genuine crystal. Swarovski's specialist manufacturing processes, together with the highest quality raw materials, guarantee the highest possible degree of precision, component quality, consistency and unmatched brilliance.

Swarovski Crystal is produced at the company’s traditional production plant in Wattens, Austria, where it is subject to the most stringent quality control. The exact recipe and the proportions of quartzes, sand and minerals remains a company secret.

Are all DYRBERG/KERN’s products nickel free?

The nickel content corresponds to the European norms and has been tested for nickel allergy. From production start,  all components used in an individual jewel are being tested from the supplier. Random tests are made by an independent international test laboratory.

How does DYRBERG/KERN control that suppliers are living up to EU law concerning heavy metals?

All DYRBERG/KERN’s suppliers are testing their components used in the production in internal laboratory. The process is followed closely by DYRBERG/KERN’s local Quality Control, at the supplier's factories.

Further to that, DYRBERG/KERN’s quality department will choose individual test items from each supplier to be taken out of production and tested by an international laboratory. These tests are then compared to the test given by the supplier in order to secure an accurate result.

Why do some people get an allergic reaction to the jewels although DYRBERG/KERN follows the standards for the content and release of heavy metals?

There are a lot of factors related to this. Some can be body imbalanced; ie. stress. Others can be the use of chemicals in connection with wearing the jewel. (Perfume, hairspray), intake of alcohol or even strong medicine.

Why are precious stones not equal in the colour and shape?

All precious stones are natural, and hand cut into shape. Therefore sometimes the texture of the stone can effect the cutting, and change the shape a bit. This is very difficult to see, as the shape will not vary that much between the stones.

With regards to the different shades of the colour for precious stone, the case is the same. The structure will vary, and therefore the colour in some places might be darker than others. Sometimes one stone has different shades, but sometimes all depending on the size of the stone and where it is cut, one stone can have one shade, and another stone can have another shade. DYRBERG/KERN likes the variery and natural look of these stones.

How can I keep my jewellery looking beautiful and clean?

To keep your jewel nice, you can clean it with a soft cloth, and eventually clean it in lukewarm water and hereafter wipe it with a soft cloth. – Never use any chemical cleaning liquids.

It is important to keep your jewel away from contact with hairspray and perfume, as these strong chemicals can harm the crystals, beads, leather and plating on the jewel.

It is also recommended not to leave the jewel in the bathroom, as the humidity might cause the jewel to oxidize.

Can I sleep with my jewellery / watch?

DYRBERG/KERN recommends that you take off your jewellery when sleeping.

Can I wear my jewellery when swimming?

No. DYRBERG/KERN recommends taking off your jewels when in water. In saltwater of chlorine, there can be seen a chemical reaction, that may change the look of your jewel. All DYRBERG/KERN watches are water resistant to until 5 ATM, which means that they will handle splashes of water, and wearing in the rain.

Can I wear my jewellery / watch during sports?

No. DYRBERG/KERN recommends taking off your jewel / watch during sports activities. The metal may change appearance when being in contact with sweat.
